Hackers have vowed to launch a “cyber war” against the Thai government following the endorsement of its controversial new Computer Crime Bill.

Hackers from the Citizens Against Single Gateway group promised to start attacking government websites from Dec 20th in a statement posted on the group’s Facebook page.

However, on Monday afternoon it appeared that the so called cyber war against the Thai government had begun in earnest with the websites for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Ministry of Defence already taken offline.

The group promised to take action after Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly on Friday approved an amendment to the country’s already strict Computer Crime Act, despite opposition from more than 360,000 people who had signed an online petition against the amendment.

Critics of the new bill said it will give the Thai government greater control of the internet and infringe on user privacy and freedom of expression.

The amendment to the bill would allow the Thai government to read private messages and block any website it deems to be harmful to national security, without the need for a court order.

On Sunday, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd warned that anyone would carried out cyber attacks against government websites would be in violation of the law.

Lt Gen Sansern also reassured internet users in Thailand and said the amended bill would only be used to shut down websites with illegal content.

He added that the new bill would help Thailand to ensure that internet usage in the country is according to international standards.
